Liz Goldwyn Bio

I have held professional positions from the age of 16, while completing high school and undergraduate studies at School of Visual Arts in New York (B.F.A. in Photography, minor in Art History) Raised as an autodidact, these positions have enhanced my education and prepared me for my current research in burlesque. A brief account of the highlights of my career follows:

In 1995-1996, I worked for art director Fabien Baron's company, Baron & Baron, doing production and design work on fashion campaigns and perfume projects for clients including Issey Miyake as well as editorial and design work on photographer Hibiki Kobayashi's book "Tribe".

In 1996-1997 I worked for Magnum photographer Gilles Peress. I worked closely with Peress on the edit, layout and design of his books, catalogs and special projects, including "Mass Graves of Bosnia" as well as to be published book on Northern Ireland he has been working on for 25 years.

In 1997 Sotheby's newly created Fashion Department hired me. During my time there, I researched and cataloged the photography and illustration for the Paris `a la Mode, Nothing to Wear and To Have & To Hold auctions, and mounted exhibitions for said auctions of clothing and photographs with museum specialists. I produced the photography and cataloging of the clothing for the Marlene Dietrich Estate auction and mounted the costume exhibition for the Duke & Duchess of Windsor sale, among others. I am most proud of introducing younger contemporary artists and designers as well as fashion photographers such as William Klein and Sarah Moon to the auction market in my curatorial role with the Fashion Department. After leaving the Fashion Department in late 1999, I continued to work with Sotheby's as an Associate. I conceptualized and produced several exhibitions in Los Angeles: a costume exhibition with Chanel in September 1999, and an installation of video art by Mariko Mori in conjunction with Deitch Projects, sponsored by Costume National in March 2000.

In March 2000, I was approached by the CEO of Shiseido America to work with Shiseido as global consultant for the company. I founded and directed a fashion sponsorship and arts installation program for the company, inspired by their long history of supporting the arts in Japan. In my capacity as director of said program, I sponsored and produced fashion shows for Susan Cianciolo, Bruce and Benjamin Cho and curated and produced art installations by Libby McInnis (whose work is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum) and Kim Fisher in New York and Los Angeles. I worked with Shiseido through March 2002.

For the year 2001 (January to December) I contributed a monthly two-page column, titled "Liz Goldwyn: EYE", in the Japanese magazine, Hanatsubaki.

Also in 2001 I was asked by French Vogue to become New York Editor and write for the magazine. I have published a 1700 word piece in the May 2002 issue on the designer Patrick Kelly and his role within the history of African-American design. I also worked with curator Thelma Golden (Studio Museum of Harlem) on a Patrick Kelly retrospective at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, which took place in April 2004. In November 2002 French Vogue published my 2500 word piece on the history of cosmetics, focusing on poisonous beauty practices in the 19th century and the explosion of the industry in the 20th century.

I have just finished completing work on a book and documentary film, "Pretty Things," on the topic of burlesque queens, which I have been researching for eight years. The Performing Arts Department of The New York Public Library has requested copies of my filmed interviews with the last generation of burlesque comedians and strip-teasers (1920-1960) for their archives. Additionally, I have amassed a personal archive of costume, textile and related material covering the period 1860-2002, including an extensive collection of burlesque costumes from 1900-1960.

"Pretty Things" will premiere on HBO. The book on burlesque will be coming out Spring/Summer 2006, and "Pretty Things" will be internationally distributed in 2006.

"Pretty Things" has been given non-profit status through New York Foundation for the Arts. Grants received for this project include New York State Council for the Arts and the Roy W. Dean grant. Foundation and Corporate Sponsors include Shiseido, The Rudin Foundation, The Taubman Foundation, Steve Tisch, MAC Cosmetics and Kate Spade.
