INTERVIEW

HBO: How did you meet Spencer?

ARLENE: I met Spencer 8 years ago, in the East Village, when he was working solely in NYC, he had yet to do a large group installation and was working exclusively with individuals and very small groups. I was hired to shoot footage of his early morning projects for a local cable TV show. I was instantly fascinated with the people that chose to take part in them and by the reactions of the people that happened upon these almost surreal events.

HBO: How long have you been making films?

ARLENE: I have been a cinematographer for 12 years and I have been directing for 5.

HBO: What was the most challenging aspect about filming this project?

ARLENE: This was a large scale world tour and I was traveling with a very small crew, we had to be mobile and act spontaneously. It was challenging keeping up with Spencer's journey, which could change at a moments notice, as he was being invited to create his large scale installations in different cities throughout the world. The terrorist actions on 9-11 and tensions between India and Pakistan affected our itinerary as well. Spencer decided to cancel his installation in India, this country was now off our map.

HBO: What would you like viewers to walk away from this film with?

ARLENE: I would like people to think about their relationship with their bodies and I would hope that they could find acceptance and appreciation for what they have. I also wanted to expand people's definitions of what art is and what art can be.

HBO: What's next for you?

ARLENE: I'm currently developing two feature length documentaries that explore sub-cultures within American society. Bringing audiences into worlds they would otherwise never know.
