The Witmers

"I'm doing my best. I've been a little depressed lately but I'm trying to keep my chin up. I really miss home. tomorrow will be exactly 3 months since I got deployed. Wow - time does not fly. Geez, this letter wasn't supposed to be so down. Sorry."
-Michelle Witmer, taken from LIFE's book Last Letters Home
John and Lori Witmer sent three daughters to Iraq, a story that garnered media attention far and wide, culminating in an appearance on "The Today Show." Michelle Witmer was killed in a small-arms attack during her service as an army specialist for the Army National Guard's 32nd Military Police. At the suggestion of the Army, the other Witmer sisters, Rachel and Michelle's twin Charity, have returned to Wisconsin. It was felt the girls could be a potential target in Iraq and endanger fellow soldiers due to the widespread knowledge of their names and their family story. Charity is now on active duty in Wisconsin and Rachel is with the Army National Guard. John, Lori and Charity share their memories of Michelle.
