The Cowherd Family

"Otherwise, the job is going well. The overwhelming focus at this piont in time is to get eveyone home safe and sound. I wish that I knew more about my job - I am overwhelmed at times by its complexities and my utter lack of experience. It is always difficult being the new guy - and I suppose that it would have been more difficult had I "taken over" after our return to Germany."
-Leonard Cowherd, taken from LIFE's book Last Letters Home
Leonard Cowherd was a West Point graduate assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, and 1st Armored Division of Springfield, Mo. He was securing a building near Mukhayam Mosque when he was killed by sniper and propelled grenade fire. Leonard was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. In one of the film's most touching moments, Mary Ann Cowherd, his mother, shares a Mother's Day card she received from him after his death. His wife Sarah shares an unfinished letter she received with Leonard's belongings.
