The Byers Family

"Things are going OK, relatively speaking here. Still plenty of danger, unfortunately, but rest assured we are taking all precautions possible and "givin' 'em hell!!" I see more courage in a day than I could ever have imagined before this. You inspire me to keep on going out here. You've made it so much easier for me to see the big picture as I go through life: That service to God and others is what matters."
-Josh Byers, taken from LIFE's book Last Letters Home
Josh Byers was an Army Captain assigned to Fox Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment of Fort Carson, Colo. This West Point graduate was killed when his convoy hit an explosive device east of Baghdad. His parents, Lloyd and Mary Byers (traveling missionaries who reside in Guam), share letters and memories of Josh.
