Diary Excerpt: Finding Joey
July 4, 2003
Merrimack, New Hampshire
In one day with Joey, you can see everything that most people do not know about
him. Essentially there are two Joe Liebermans. On TV, Senator Joseph Lieberman
comes off as a stale, old, boring, sanctimonious speaker. He is the righteous preacher
going off on a moralist rant or some grating lecture. Somehow the television filters out
his personal charms. You've got to catch him live to see the Joie De Vivre Joey. In
person, he is funny and full of life. You can see why he was voted prom king and
president of his class in high school. He has a goofy, self-deprecating, wry sense of
humor and is comfortable enough in his own skin to show it. Who could have guessed
it?
