Synopsis

We're in Iowa: the heartland of America, birthplace of John Wayne, home of cattle auctions and cornfields that stretch on for what seems like forever. But behind the idyllic facade, Iowa, like other parts of rural America, is struggling mightily with a drug epidemic, specifically, addiction to methamphetamine, commonly known as "crank." Crank addicts usually start off smoking or snorting it, and almost always graduate to shooting it into the bloodstream. Despite the knowledge that crank dissolves brain cells, and its damage is permanent, addicts cannot resist the intense rush it delivers within the first minute, and few men and women who become addicted ever break the habit.

This documentary takes an up-close look at three families whose lives have been decimated by crank addiction. Their intercut stories are framed by interviews from law-enforcement officials and medical experts, who explain the historical origins and uses of methamphetimine, as well as the ingredients (all easily obtained) used to make it in illegal home-based laboratories around the U.S.
