White House Correspondents Association

This group 'represents the White House press corps in its dealings with the administration on coverage-related issues.' Elected by correspondents, the nine member board works with the White House on issues related to access to the President and other logistical matters. Helen Thomas was the first woman officer of the White House Correspondents Association. She also served as the organization's president in 1975-76.

The National Press Club

With nearly 3,500 members worldwide, the National Press Club supports journalists and the mission and development of journalism through professional education programs for journalists, funds scholarships for journalism students, and the nation's only non-academic research library for journalists. In 1971, Helen Thomas became the first female officer of the group.
