NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires each state to demonstrate progress from year
to year in raising the percentage of students who are proficient in reading and mathematics and in
narrowing the achievement gap. As a reflection of these expectations, five performance goals were
established: U.S. Department of Education - State Contacts and Information Use this map from the U.S. Department of Education to learn more about the standards and assessment tools used in your state to meet the goals of No Child Left Behind, and to review key educational data of your state and how it compares to national averages. The National Education Association - No Child Left Behind The National Education Association (NEA) is the nation's largest professional organization, representing 3.2 million elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty, education support professionals, school administrators, retired educators and students preparing to become teachers. This website includes news about No Child Left Behind, research on the impact of NCLB in the classroom, and proposals by the NEA for overhauling NCLB. ORGANIZATIONS Teach for America is a national corps of recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools. Currently, more than 5,000 corps members are teaching in over 1,000 schools in 26 regions across the country, and more than 12,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education. Established in 1988 by business and community leaders in Baltimore, this non-profit program helps city students who have demonstrated substantial academic potential achieve a post-secondary education. The mission of the Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL) is to enrich the academic experience and overall development of students from Baltimore City's public middle and high schools through participation in debate-based educational activities. The website includes resources for teachers and students, information about workshops for volunteer judges, and news about the league. READING by Jonathan Kozol, 2005.
