TAKING ACTION UNICEF - Unite for Children - Iraq UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories helping children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. Since 2003, the group has helped rebuild over 1,000 schools in Iraq, developed an accelerated learning program which helps children pass the countries primary school exams, and tankered safe drinking water to schools. UNHCR has provided aid and shelter to millions of displaced people for half a century. In 2007, the group provided textbooks, stationary, and school uniforms to approximately 25,000 Iraqi children. The group also offers primary health and medical services, food, shelter, transportation, and legal assistance to internally displaced persons throughout Iraq. Institute of International Education - Scholar Rescue Fund - Iraq Scholar Rescue Project This project aims to assist more than 150 of Iraq's most senior and most threatened academics through temporary positions at institutions of higher learning in the Middle East and North African regions. The goal of the fund is to contribute to the preservation of Iraq's vital intellectual capital and ensure that, when conditions permit, these scholars will be able to return home to rebuild. Listen to George Rupp, President of the IRC, Safaa El-Kogali, Economist at the World Bank, and Angelina Jolie discussing the challenges facing students and teachers in Iraq today and what organizations are doing to help.
