HBO How are you feeling about things since 'The Art
of Failure' has come out?
Chuck Connelly Well, I'm digging it, you know? The life that
they show in the film is pretty dingy and all.
But it's certainly changing my life. I don't
know where it's gonna all end up, but it's
pretty amazing. It's good to get all this
attention. Friends are even treating me nicer.
And the movie doesn't even show me as a
better person, but people treat me like I am.
![]() HBO Well, it's a very human portrait. It shows you,
warts and all, so to speak. And that's what
makes it so compelling. It seems as if there's
very little difference between the way you live
your life and what you put on your canvases.
Chuck Connelly Yeah. I let it all hang out there whether I'm
painting or in life. No reservations. Say what
I want - often to the wrong people or for the
wrong reasons. I just do what I want, take it
or leave it. Sometimes I f**k up, sometimes I
hit gold. But that's the way I do it.
HBO What inspires you, as of late?
Chuck Connelly Well, I guess when you start out like a child,
painting in the basement, you're just trying to
escape and find a place where you can put
your little self into and express your feelings.
You don't have any expectations. And then
you end up going to art school and you're
competing with other people; then you're kind
of in a competitive mode, and you're inspired
to outdo others, and going by whatever artists
are inspiring you and developing until you
finally find something that's yours...that's
really yours.
And then you start painting just to paint. And then you start making a living at it. And that inspires you to make money. And then you can't make money, and you gotta paint a better painting than you did yesterday, 'cause you're only as good as your last painting. And so, you force yourself to paint, even if you don't want to. And that gets you inspired by desperation and then guilt for not working, so you force yourself to do it. Right now, I haven't painted for a couple of weeks. And I can't wait to paint again. I wonder what that will be like. That's kinda fun to think about. ![]() HBO What do you think about the cliché that great art can only come out of a tortured soul?
Chuck Connelly Well, it's a cliché but it seems to be the case.
I think if you have the ability to make great
art you're under a lot of pressure in your own
mind. And it's not all fun; it's like a duty that
you have to fulfill. And you don't always feel
up to it, so you are constantly at battle with
that, just to keep that thing flowing
sometimes when there is no flow.
But sometimes out of the darkest moments are when you have to go there just to clear out the crap, you know? And so, if I'm really down and out, if I start painting, I sorta get out of there and I'm somewhere else. And that's probably the best thing - when it works - is when you leave yourself with this pain that you get. And if you're not working, you're just waiting to do something good. You're doing nothing but feeding off yourself. And then you're building up guilt and you gotta get rid of it. HBO So will your newfound success spoil Chuck
Connelly?
Chuck Connelly Well, I hope not, but I am aware that it's
possible. And it mighta spoiled me before,
but that wasn't nothing compared to what
this will bring. But hopefully I have my head
on my shoulders by now, and I take things a
little lighter.
