Rafael Casal
A 19-year-old poet out of the Bay Area of California, Rafael Casal was a three-time finalist in the Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam, and two-time champion of the Brave New Voices National Poetry Slam. His poetry has been published in the Youth Speaks anthology "My Words Consume Me" (published by McSweeney's) and appears in the "Bringing The Noise" CD (Volumes 2 and 3).
At 18, Casal won his first adult poetry slam at the Nuyorican Poetry Cafe in New York, and became the youngest poet to appear on Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO. In the spring of 2004, he coached the Bay Area youth poetry slam team to win the BNV nationals in Los Angeles. More recently, Casal has expanded into music - bridging his poetry with hip-hop music. He is also working on a theater piece with Broadway veteran Marc Bamuthi Joseph and Youth Speaks director James Kass -- to premiere at the Hip-Hop Theater Festival in 2006.
