Kelly Tsai
Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai is a Chinese/Taiwanese American spoken word artist who splits her time between Chicago and New York. Appearing in her second season of Def Poetry, Tsai has performed across the country at venues including the House of Blues in Chicago and the Nuyorican Poets Café and Apollo Theater in New York. She also tours nationally with Mango Tribe, a cross-city women's theater troupe that falls under the auspices of the Asian Pacific Islander American artists collective. Winner of Governor's International Exchange Award, Tsai was sent to the Women's Playwright International Conference last year in Manila, where she was when the tsunami hit - prompting her to write her poem, "Aftershocks," which she performed at this season of HBO's Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry.
Tsai also performed in the New York premiere of "We Got Issues!" directed by Rha Goddess and Lenora Pace, and has hosted the National Poetry Slam Asian American Showcase, the National Asian Pacific Islander American Spoken Word Summit, Women Outloud, and Chicago's "Louder than a Bomb" Teen Poetry Festival. Tsai is also the author of one chapbook: Inside Outside Outside Inside.
