About

Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam

A cornerstone of HBO's late-night block of original entertainment, Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam returns this January with a new host: superstar comic D.L. Hughley, who will welcome some new and familiar faces. In addition to an opening film clip featuring surprise guests and an introductory routine from Hughley, each half-hour show will include three to four comedians, the music of veteran deejay Kid Capri, and an appearance by The Man himself, Russell Simmons - all in front of an enthusiastic audience in Los Angeles.

Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam was developed by Russell Simmons, the rap impresario and a driving force behind the rise of hip-hop music and culture. The original incarnation aired on HBO from 1992-1997, and early seasons were hosted by Martin Lawrence; later editions relied on a rotation of guest hosts, including Cedric the Entertainer, Michael Colyar, Mark Curry, Adele Givens, Ricky Harris, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Ed Lover, Sommore, Talent, George Wallace and John Witherspoon. The show re-launched in 2006 - after a nearly decade-long hiatus - with host Mike Epps.

Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam premieres Sundays at 10 pm ET/PT (right after The Wire) beginning January 6, with encores on subsequent Fridays at midnight. In addition, as part of HBO On Demand's "See It First," new episodes will be available on HOD the Monday before their network premieres.
