6AM: The special effects team lights the torches and lamps, and sets out smudgepots of charcoal and kerosene for a thick blanket of smoke; the street is continuously hosed to create Deadwood's signature muck.
The first rehearsal of the day, for a brief scene showing Merrick and Blazanov delivering newspapers, is set for 6:20. Series creator David Milch, executive producers Gregg Fienberg and Mark Tinker, director Ed Bianchi, 1st AD Kenny Roth, script supervisor Gabi Endicott are on-hand to run the scene with actors Jeffrey Jones and Pasha Lychnikoff.
