There are times when Jewel's sole purpose in life seems to be taking abuse from Al Swearengen. But despite Al's complaints about the noise she makes dragging her crippled leg as she sweeps the Gem, Jewel has the remarkable ability to rise above. Saddled with several disabilities, she's had to face bigger obstacles than Swearengen, and she never gives up hope that things can get better.

Deadwood Nuggets
"The Plainsman" was a Cecil B. DeMille movie released in 1937. It starred Gary Cooper as Wild Bill Hickok and Jean Arthur as Calamity Jane. The movie served to encourage the romantic versions of Calamity Jane's life, as were popular in the 1920's and 1930's.
