Jack McCall is the living embodiment of the seamy side of Deadwood. Classless, filthy and stupid, McCall seemingly lives to irritate all of those that are unfortunate enough to be around him. McCall takes an instant disliking to Hickok, probably due to Wild Bill's notoriety, and it's obvious that McCall plans to use Hickok to build his own reputation.
