In an industry full of character actors, W. Earl Brown has made his way as an actor with character...an adaptable character at that. Portraying a variety of colorful personalities has given Brown a varied career thus far. From depicting a comical disabled grown-up kid to a gritty cowboy with a conscience, Brown has experience in numerous roles.
A porch in Golden Pond, Kentucky is where it all began. Listening to the animated tales of his grandfather on an old front porch, Brown let his young imagination run wild -- and it never came back. Creative thinking and constant reinvention is what has allowed him to create some of his most memorable characters.
After receiving his Master's Degree in Fine Arts from DePaul University in 1989, Brown married his high school sweetheart. A move to Los Angeles in 1993 proved to be a wise choice when he began working almost immediately. Auditioning for director Wes Craven was a milestone for Brown when it lead to a role in Wes Craven's New Nightmare and then Craven's A Vampire In Brooklyn.
Next up for Brown was a part in the original Scream. A few short years later he landed a coveted role alongside Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary. Infamous for its display of physical comedy, Brown was unforgettable as Diaz's mentally-challenged brother, 'Warren,' in this side-splittingly funny role.
Along the way have been numerous television roles, including spots on Six Feet Under, The X Files, NYPD Blue, CSI, and a recurring role in Push, NV. He was cast in the films Deep Impact and Kiss The Girls, and was featured in the Oscar-nominated Being John Malkovich.
Most recently, answering the call of the Old West, Brown signed on to HBO's new gritty and graphic depiction of early America in the highly-regarded series Deadwood, written by David Milch. As cowboy Dan Dority, he may follow orders to kill, but Brown readily shows us a deeper conscience that eats at him as an internal battle develops.
Working on set with Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid for The Alamo took the cowboy role to the big screen. In addition to his developing role on Deadwood, next up are more roles on the big screen with Killer Diller and The Last Shot. Brown recently completed shooting The Big White, starring Robin Williams, Holly Hunter and Giovanni Ribisi, which is scheduled for release in 2005.
