Synopsis

During the September installment of CostasNOW, images of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina are still fresh in all our minds. Days after the storm hit the Gulf Coast, Bob Costas traveled to Philadelphia, Mississippi to visit with perhaps New Orleans' most celebrated sports icon. Archie Manning, the former Saints and Ole Miss quarterback, fled to his wife's family's house in Philadelphia when the storm hit, and, on CostasNOW, he spoke of the tragedy for the first time.

Also on the show, Bob sat down with the recently retired Jerry Rice. The 42-year-old receiving legend decided to end his NFL career rather than accept a job as the Broncos' fourth receiver, and he speaks about that difficult decision. Rice also reflects on an amazing career in which he re-wrote the receiving record book, and won three Super Bowl rings with the 49ers and played in a fourth with the Raiders.

Speaking of legends, they don't get much bigger than Paul Newman, who's been making movies for over fifty years. The actor has various passions away from the screen as well, chief among them auto racing. For years, he has co-owned a CART racing team, and Bob joined the 80-year-old Newman at a recent race in Montreal. In addition to his love of racing, Newman also talks about several of his sports-related film roles, including Eddie Felson in The Hustler and Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me.

September's panel featured three individuals who have much to say about current events. Cris Collinsworth was on hand to preview the NFL season; John McEnroe talked about the U.S. Open and all things tennis; and Tim Russert shared his thoughts not only about sports, but also Hurricane Katrina. Other topics include one of the most difficult decisions a pro athlete faces: When is the right time to retire?

Finally, the show wrapped up by taking a look back at one of the most poorly conceived ideas in the history of sports promotions: Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland, which was held at an Indians game in 1974. As three who were there recount, the results were disastrous.
