Synopsis
In the June installment of CostasNOW, with the NBA Finals as a backdrop, the show focused its lens on basketball. The Detroit Pistons are fighting to defend their title, but as Ben Wallace, Richard Hamilton, and company have made their way through the playoffs over the past several weeks, the team has had to deal with rumors surrounding the potential departure of its Hall-of-Fame coach, Larry Brown. Detroit is Brown's tenth stop in 33 years of coaching, and it recently was made public that the nomadic coach has had discussions with the Cleveland Cavaliers about becoming their team president next season. Bob sat down with Brown to get his side of the story and find out the truth behind the rumors.
On their way to the finals, Brown's Pistons defeated Reggie Miller's Pacers, not only eliminating Indiana but ending the final season of the legendary Miller's 18-year-career. Over those years, Miller became one of the league's most hated - albeit respected - villains, thanks to his uncanny ability to hit big shots in the biggest moments on the biggest stages. As he heads into retirement, he joined Bob for a conversation and even offers an on-court tutorial of some of his secrets, including how to successfully "flop."
As the crowning of this season's NBA champion draws nearer, so too does the deadline for the league and players' union to reach an agreement on a collective bargaining deal. One of the issues that could become a sticking point in the ongoing talks is a proposed minimum age limit. Currently, American players who are eighteen are eligible for the draft, but Commissioner David Stern has proposed raising that minimum age to 20. Armen Keteyian explored the issue, and talked to some of the future stars whose lives it could be impacting.
Plus, an all-star panel discussion about the world of sports featuring former New York Giants quarterback and current CBS football analyst Phil Simms; Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; and NBC Nightly News anchor emeritus Tom Brokaw. In a roundtable moderated by Bob, the guests discuss, among other topics, the world of sports talk radio and race in sports. And finally, on the eve of the U.S. Open's return to Pinehurst, North Carolina for the first time since the late Payne Stewart won the title there in 1999, CostasNOW tells the story of Aaron Stewart, Payne Stewart's now-16-year-old son, and his unique relationship with one of his father's greatest rivals, Lee Janzen.
