Chris Gethard: Career Suicide

Chris Gethard’s Career Suicide Playlist

You probably already know Chris Gethard is a massive fan of The Smiths. You can listen to some of Chris’s other favorite artists on his Spotify playlist. Here, he explains his selections:

1. Going Crazy - The Marked Men

I love punk rock and these guys wrote a song that really rings true to me.

2. Levi Stubbs’ Tears - Billy Bragg

If you are a fan of your entertainment wallowing in sadness, this song can not be beat.

3. AJJ - No More Shame, No More Fear, No More Dread

AJJ also did the intro song to Career Suicide – they have a lot of songs about mental illness that I really dig.

4. Mal Blum - New Years Eve

Mal is one of my great friends in this world and writes a lot of great songs. One of their specialties, if you ask me, is their ability to write songs about having one’s confidence shattered. Fitting for this list!

5. Fatlip - What’s Up Fatlip?

I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever heard a better song about feeling beaten up, directionless, and scared.

6. Eef Barzelay - Lose Big

The music of this song has that somber tone I love, and the lyrics break my heart.

7. J Church - Imaginary Friends

This band was defining for my childhood, and this song captures that feeling of watching someone around you slip mentally and how terrifying and sobering that can be.

8. The Ergs – Books About Miles Davis

One of my favorite bands ever. A song of unrequited love, ultimately, but also a song about wanting to disappear and run away from one’s problems.

9. The Replacements - Here Comes A Regular

There is one stretch of Career Suicide where I talk about why I walked away from drinking booze. This song is like the heartbreaking future I saw coming for myself.)

10. The Ramones – Danny Says

This is an odd choice! I bet you thought I would pick Gimme Shock Treatment or any of the other Ramones songs about being nuts or sniffing glue. This one though, is so sad and about feeling stuck in a rut and a routine that just ain’t working for ya. I think this song is so beautiful.
