The once-beaten former interim world champion at 154 pounds is a former amateur star and 2004 Olympic representative for Mexico.
On Nov. 7, 2009, in Hartford, Conn., and the co-feature HBO bout on the Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson card, Angulo passed a huge test when he recorded a devastating third-round knockout over unbeaten Harry Joe Yorgey for the interim WBO belt. He successfully defended it on April 24, 2010 in Ontario, Calif., stopping the highly-touted Joel Julio in the 11th round off a fight Angulo was handily winning, serving notice to the junior middleweight division that there's a new sheriff in town.
Angulo is one of the brightest prospects in the Junior Middleweight/Super Welterweight division. The sole blemish on his record came against former IBF welterweight champ Kermit Cintron in a WBC 154-pound title eliminator on May 30, 2009. Angulo lost the fight via unanimous decision, but suffered from the flu and did not look his best, or healthy, in the bout.
After the Cintron fight, Fightwriter's Graham Houston wrote: "Angulo will be back, of course. He is a crowd-pleaser, and Saturday's loss has the mitigating factor of the fighter not being himself physically.
"I think most boxing observers feared there was a problem with Angulo when the HBO pre-bout graphics showed his fight-night weight to be 159 pounds, with Cintron all the way up to 169. (Angulo had weighed 165 on the night for each of his last two bouts.)."
Angulo bounced back from the loss with a quick second-round TKO over Gabriel Rosado on Aug. 7.
Currently residing in Coachella, Calif., Angulo trains at the Maywood Boxing Club and has worked with trainer, Clemente Medina, since he turned pro.
The once-beaten fighter describes his style as very aggressive.
"I can knock an opponent out quickly or box," Angulo said.
Angulo said he received his nickname, "El Perro," when he was on the Olympic team because of the way he fights.
