HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: PAULIE MALIGNAGGI VS. EDNER CHERRY, SECHEW POWELL VS. ISHE SMITH, AND ANDRE BERTO VS. NORBERTO BRAVO
A HOT LATE-NIGHT TRIPLEHEADER, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, ON HBO
HBO's hit late-night boxing series showcases a roster of exciting young fighters from the Big Apple when HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: PAULIE MALIGNAGGI VS. EDNER CHERRY, SECHEW POWELL VS. ISHE SMITH, AND ANDRE BERTO VS. NORBERTO BRAVO is presented SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17 at 9:45 PM (ET/PT), from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team of Fran Charles, Max Kellerman and Lennox Lewis will be ringside for the event which will be available in HDTV, as well as closed-captioned for the hearing impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.
In the main event, it's a 10-round Junior Welterweight showdown, as the flashy and popular Brooklyn New York native Paulie Malignaggi (21-1, 5 KOs) and Edner Cherry (21-4-2, 10 KOs) of Wauchula, Florida, square off in a contest that promises big action. Returning to ring for the first time since his battle with Miguel Cotto in June of 2006, Malignaggi looks to return to his winning ways. Standing in his way is Edner Cherry, an exciting contender and fan favorite who has scored two late round knockouts in his last two fights.
In the evening's co-main event, Sechew Powell (20-1, 12 KOs) of Brooklyn, New York and Ishe Smith (18-1, 8 KOs) of Las Vegas, Nevada meet in a 10-round battle of young, top-rated Junior Middleweights. Powell is returning to the ring after a disappointing decision loss to Kassim Ouma last August. Hungry for victory, he will look to make Smith the third "Contender" show participant he's defeated. Ishe Smith, with his only loss coming to Sergio Mora in the short, five round "Contender" format, looks to establish himself as a legitimate Junior Middleweight threat.
The opening bout of the evening features the return of Andre Berto (16-0, 14 KOs) from Miami, Florida, facing off against Norberto Bravo (29-6-1, 17 KOs), in a 10-round Welterweight fight. Making his second appearance on HBO, Berto returns to the ring after his dominating knockout performance over Miguel Figueroa in December.
