WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO VS. CALVIN BROCK, SATURDAY, OCT. 14, 11:00 PM ET/PT

COMPUBOX POST-FIGHT ANALYSIS

Wladimir Klitschko's Madison Square Garden ring entrance Saturday night featured an impostor making his way down an aisleway, before the HBO cameras focused on the real Wladimir as he made his approach. Through the first four rounds, it appeared as if the Wladimir-look-a-like was in the ring with challenger Calvin Brock.

After 12 minutes, Klitschko, a 4-1 favorite, had landed just 34 total punches, 26 of which were jabs. The shaking and baking (and clinching) Brock, concentrating on Klitschko's expansive torso, landed 49 total punches, 35 of which were power shots (non-jabs). The fight was even, many in the crowd of 14,260 began booing and this ringsider began thinking upset with the vision of Calvin Brock, Shannon Briggs, Oleg Maskaev and Nicolai Valuev as our heavyweight champs.

Beginning with round five, Klitschko pulled a Clark Kent. He threw 65 punches, after averaging 40 in rounds 1-4, landing 27. He also landed 22 of 57 jabs, (triple the heavyweight average), many landing with the force of a power punch. Wladimir continued to use his right hand sparingly, but did land five of eight in the fifth, rocking Brock late in the round.

Klitschko mixed in 17 power punches in the sixth among his 44 total punches. He kept Brock at bay by landing 8 of 27 jabs, while landing six power shots. Not exactly Kassim Ouma numbers, but he was clearly wearing Brock down, as the challenger managed just 39 total punches, his lowest output since round one.

Two minutes into the seventh several thudding Klitschko jabs set up a thunderous right hand that sent Brock to the canvas- face first. He beat the count, but was in no shape to continue. Brock became the 29th challenger in the last 30 Garden heavyweight title fights to leave the ring without winning the championship. Bonecrusher Smith, yes Bonecrusher, was the only challenger to pull it off, knocking out the disinterested defending champ Tim Witherspoon in the first round of their 1986 title fight. James Toney's win over defending champ John Ruiz was changed to a no contest after Toney tested positive for steroids...with that body?

Overall, Klitschko landed 90 of 305 total punches (30%) to 77 of 280 (28%) for Brock. Of those 90 Klitschko connects, 62 were jabs. He landed just 28 power shots, 1/3 of which landed in round seven. Manny Steward's got Klitschko relying more on the jab and in an effort to conserve energy (and diminish the incoming fire), he's now picking his spots with his power shots. In his wins over Brock and Sam Peter, Klitschko's averaged just 15 power punches thrown per round, nearly half the heavyweight average.
