WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: CARLOS BALDOMIR VS. ARTURO GATTI
Atlantic City treats boxing fans to one of the sport's most exciting fighters and perhaps one of its most underrated performers SATURDAY, JULY 22,2006 10:00 PM ET/7:00 PM PT.
June 26, 2006
The HBO Sports team of Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward will be ringside for the event, which will be closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.
Even with a decisive homecourt advantage at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Jersey City resident Arturo Gatti will have to use all of his skills and heart against current welterweight champ Carlos Baldomir in their summertime showdown at the Jersey shore.
A native of Santa Fe, Argentina, Baldomir (42-9-6, 12 KOs) has battled his way through the division without losing a bout in more than five years. During the course of that streak, Baldomir's most noteworthy victory came on January 7, 2006 when "Tata" captured a title from Zab Judah with a unanimous decision in New York, sending shockwaves throughout the 147- pound division.
In the opposing corner on fight night will be Arturo Gatti, whose career has also benefited from thrilling upsets. Gatti's knack for the dramatic has earned him a record of (40-7, 31 KOs) and made him one of the sport's most popular and engaging stars. Most recently, "Thunder's" January 2006 TKO of Thomas Damgaard has re-invigorated his career and now the opportunity to capture another championship is being presented. The showdown marks Baldomir's first appearance on HBO; Gatti will be making his 20th appearance on HBO. The welterweight title fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
