OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN: SHANE MOSLEY VS. FERNANDO VARGAS II
July 14, 2006
If you had walked into the Arena at MGM Grand just a little past 2:30 PM for the official weigh-in for Mosley-Vargas II on July 14, 2006, you may have thought you were at the wrong fight. Fans were treated to a display by Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins, onstage showing support for fellow Golden Boy fighter Shane Mosley. Hopkins flashed some skin, lifting his shirt and ensuring the crowd that while he is still retired and "just relaxing," he is "in shape, all the time." Hopkins thanked the crowd for their support and greeted Shane Mosley with a big hug just as the official weigh-in began.
The crowd this afternoon was out in support of Vargas, who despite being the underdog, drew a large crowd from his North Carolina hometown, all who were on their feet with cheers for Vargas and boos and taunts for Mosley. A pensive Vargas stepped on the scale very much looking, just as his manager had said earlier in the week, "100% in shape." After a tense moment Fernando showed his happiness with the 154 pound result: he gave a war cry and flexed his muscles to the cheering crowd.
Shane Mosley, smiling and unfazed by the taunts from the Vargas fans, stepped onto the scale to cheers from his own fans. Mosley, supported onstage by Hopkins, Oscar De La Hoya and Marco Antonio Barrera, made weight at 153 pounds. Afterwards, Mosley bobbed and weaved for the camera, showing off his lightning quick punches to constant cheering, directing his punches toward the Vargas supporters with a sly grin before turning back to the dozens of flashing cameras.
