FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE: SHANE MOSLEY VS. FERNANDO VARGAS II
July 12, 2006
Will Mosley finish what he started and move on to greater things or will Vargas seal his legacy with another amazing win? Those were the questions at the pre-fight press conference, Wednesday at the MGM Grand.
It was a charged event, with Vargas' trainer, Rolando Arellano, first praising the Mosley camp with an honest salute to their boxer, bringing recent accusations of disrespect to a close. He then answered claims that Vargas' legacy would be challenged if he didn't win this fight with an emotional and adamant response: Arellano listed Fernando's numerous accomplishments, including his position as "the youngest member of the US Olympic team." Arellano also touted his fighter's "100% better" physical fitness, the result of what Vargas has described as a serious change in training habits since his last fight with Mosley.
Jack Mosley, Shane's father and trainer, responded in kind to comments from the Vargas camp that Fernando was looking for a knockout by referring to those statements as "pure science-fiction" and calling even the thought of a knockout "absurd."
The room was also treated to the always impressive and never dull display of "Captain" Cassius Green, who warned of a Mosley unlike the "Sugar" Shane you've seen before and reminded the audience that, when thinking of MGM Grand, they should keep in mind that to him it stands for "Mosley's Greatest Moment."
Both boxers also had their moments at the podium and seemed to be in a calm state of mental preparation, with comments keep brief, though that did not stop mentions from Shane Mosley that both fighters are "looking to knock each other out."
Judging by the energy in the room from both camps, these fighters are primed and ready to go and the audience could be in for a real treat Saturday night as Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas go at it again!
