Dressing Gillian
Costume Designer John Dunn and Co-Costume Designer Lisa Padovani take particular pleasure in dressing Gillian (Gretchen Mol). In season one, she was still working as a showgirl at the Beaux Arts.
Gillian's clothing is always a little glitzy, even for daytime. It is also a little bit hokey and low-rent.
In season two, Gillian dances for the Commodore in her "Diana" costume from her Beaux Arts days.
The costume department constructed the dress and the headpiece.
The headpiece is a half-moon, a common motif for showgirl hats.
They created a stencil based on a period pattern and painted it on dyed fabric. The trim was pre-beaded and sewn on.
For the Princeton flashback, they had to create clothing with an earlier silhouette - from the teens. Women were still wearing corsets so dresses were more fitted.
Gillian's travelling suit was based on a disintegrated vintage piece that was reconstructed.
The necklace is antique.
The suit was made of moiré silk taffeta with velvet trim and vintage buttons and lace.
