episode 141 Premiered November 14, 2008 Guests: Actor Ashton Kutcher, journalist Jon Meacham, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Sean "Diddy" Combs and columnist Dan Savage. On Obama Getting Elected You know, we never got the "40 acres and a mule," and we didn't get a lot of other things promised. So, we'll take this one and maybe we'll clean up the lyrics now. Sean "Diddy" Combs I would say that I'm a fiscally conservative individual, in general, and probably very socially liberal, but there really isn't a party that exists for that. So I'm a little bit in between. I wasn't that far away from looking at John McCain as a viable candidate for myself, because I sit somewhere in the middle. But, as soon as a Sarah Palin comes onto a ticket, it turns me away so feverishly. Ashton Kutcher On the Bailout 'm just saying that we have passed out all this money. The banks were supposed to lend the money. That's why we gave the money to the banks. But, we never got that in writing, you see? They didn't deploy the money. They're hoarding the money. They did a similar thing in England, but they got something for the money. We gave the money with no strings. This is outrageous. Bill Maher On a Bailout for the Automakers You know who should bail them out, is the oil companies... the reason for their companies' decline is their allegiance to the oil companies. Ashton Kutcher On Gay Marriage I think a lot of what is behind this Proposition 8 is the idea that marriage is some sort of sacred institution that has been the same since the beginning of time, and that to allow gays to marry would change that. But, the truth is that marriage has not been the same since the beginning of time. Bill Maher Marriage has evolved and changed throughout history. And what's happened for the opponents of gay marriage, the problem for them is not that gay people want to redefine marriage but that straight people have redefined marriage to a point now that no longer makes any logical sense to exclude loving, committed same-sex couples from the institution. Marriage is two people making a commitment to love and support each other, to be there for each other. A marriage can be monogamous or not monogamous; it can be about having children or not having children. It can be forever or not forever. And it can be civil or religious. Dan Savage On Election Reform Before we move on to the next election, could we possibly fix the election process as we have it now? I couldn't help notice that there are three states that are still counting the votes. "American Idol" seems to be able to do it before the hour is up. But, we don't know who is the senator in Minnesota. We don't know Alaska. We don't know in Georgia. Bill Maher |
