The Lady Vanishes
Leeds, England, 1999: George Eckersley reported that his wife of 4 years, Bernice, disappeared with the couple's new car. A woman fitting Bernice's description was seen in the car at a nearby resort, but the trail ended there. After George made an impassioned radio plea for his wife to return, a suicide letter arrived; shortly after, Bernice's sweater and a bottle of vodka were found on a beach.

Most Brits assumed Bernice drowned herself, but unconvinced police decided to run a DNA test on the saliva used to seal the letter's envelope (seen left). As George Eckersley soon found out, sometimes you can't lick the system.
