Criss/Cross
In 1978, the scantily clad body of Rosa Rasso was found in a Manhattan parking lot. Rosa's husband Dennis (seen left) admitted to police that the two had fought while dancing in a nightclub, but he had an alibi: he was inside the club at the time of the murder.

The case became more complicated when Rosa's best friend, Mary Ellen Azzollini, was murdered in her home shortly thereafter. Police suspected Mary Ellen's husband, Stephen (seen right), but he, too, had an alibi.

Although no weapon was found at the Azzollini home, a pair of eyeglasses were discovered -- and traced to Dennis Rasso. Offering to help police, Stephen Azzollini visited the Police Department, but grew panicky and threw away an incriminating necklace in the station's bathroom. Later retrieved from a crack in the bathroom wall, the necklace turned out to be the weapon used to strangle Rosa Rasso. In addition, fibers found beneath Rosa Rasso's fingernails matched fibers found in Dennis Rasso's van (seen left).

Confronted with the evidence, Stephen Azzollini confessed. He and Dennis had made a pact to kill each other's wives: Dennis wanted Rosa dead because he thought she was an adulterer and bad mother; Stephen wanted to collect on life insurance he'd taken out on Mary Ellen. Both were equally guilty of murder.
