The Story of Anna
On a 1995 summer evening, 12-year-old "Anna" (name withheld) finished dinner and went for a bike ride. She didn't return. Finding her abandoned bike by the side of a road, police combed the area looking for her body. The next day, however, Anna was found alive but dazed, her eyes bloodshot. She'd been raped and sodomized. With a manhunt already under way, Anna told police she remembered the numbers 4, 2 and 0 on the license plate of her assailant's car.

Police discovered that a man named Patrick May had just been in an auto accident; on his plates was the number 402. An examination of May revealed strange, dotted bite marks on the insides of his legs. Forensic dentist Dr. Lowell Levine examined the marks (seen upper left), matching them to the teeth and braces of Anna (center left).

Dr. Michael Baden was also brought in to testify that the pressure marks on Anna's neck, as well as the hemorrhaging in her eyes (seen lower left), were caused by attempted strangulation. Based on this evidence, May was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison.
