The Cavaness Murders
In Eldorado, IL, Dr. John Cavaness (right) was a beloved figure and "perfect" father to four sons. So when one of the boys, Mark, was found shot dead, no one thought it could be anything but a tragic accident.

Seven years later, however, Mark's brother Sean died under similar circumstances (right), and eyewitnesses linked his father to the scene. Cavaness admitted he'd been with his son, but insisted Sean had shot himself; however, it was determined that the angle of the wounds ruled out suicide.
Brought to trial, Dr. Cavaness was convicted of murder. The apparent motive: insurance money.
