Ask Dr. Baden: An Autopsy Special
Episode 10

This all-new edition of HBO's hugely popular Autopsy documentary series explores two suspicious cases of death that were brought to HBO's attention as a result of the "Ask Dr. Baden" interactive component to the Autopsy website on hbo.com. After emailing their stories to the website, several potential subjects were contacted by HBO, with their cases examined in the trademark Autopsy fashion. In each of the two cases that were selected for this special, surviving family members and friends are interviewed by HBO and Dr. Baden, who also painstakingly examines forensic evidence and performs autopsies in an attempt to uncover the mysteries surrounding each case. Ultimately, after analyzing all the evidence, an opinion is rendered by Dr. Baden for each of the cases- not necessarily placating the original questioners, or even some of those contacted over the course of the investigation. Ask Dr. Baden: An Autopsy Special focuses on the following intriguing stories.

How Did Terrie Petrie's Babies Die?
In 2000, an Ontario woman named Terrie Petrie gave birth to a daughter, her second child. Eight days later, the baby was dead, and the cause of death was determined to be SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). A year and a half later, Terrie found out she was pregnant again, this time with twin boys. But three months and one week after the boys were born, they too died mysteriously - both on the same night. With police suspicious and newspapers vilifying her, Terrie wrote Dr. Baden on the Autopsy website, then flew to New York for an interview. Five months, myriad forensic analyses and a polygraph test later, Dr. Baden summoned Terrie back to deliver his opinion as to why the three babies died. As he explains to Terrie, there were four possibilities: 1) genetic abnormality; 2) SIDS; 3) accidental roll-over; and 4) homicide. Dr. Baden's verdict - based on evidence and interviews by both Terrie and her friend Tammy - is "not quite the answer I wanted to hear," confesses a sobbing Terrie.

The Lady in the Lake
After a young woman named Jennie Sparks emailed Dr. Baden on behalf of her uncle, Darrell Forbis, a grisly tale of death emerged involving Darrell' mother, Mary Jane Gooding. Over 20 years after the 32-year-old Gooding went missing, a car containing her bones was discovered in a lake in Marysville, CA. With no evidence of foul play, police ruled that Gooding was the victim of a terrible accident, and most likely died after mistaking a curve and inadvertently driving the car into the lake. Interviewed by HBO, Darrell remembers how his mother, who managed a motel with her new husband, Ron Roberts, had disappeared one day and never returned, leaving the 10-year-old boy to a future in foster homes. Now that she has been found, Darrell is looking for answers, possibly in her remains. After Dr. Baden examines Gooding's bones in New York, her son arrives to pay his last respects. Soon after, the producers track down Ron Roberts, who for a fee agrees to travel to New York for an interview. As we see, what Roberts tells us provides some answers for Darrell and his sister Darlean - yet also raises just as many questions. The story ends as Darrell and Darlean finally bury the bones of their mother - bringing at least a degree of closure to the family.
